The Porch Public House in Hayden is the perfect place to grab a beer with friends or enjoy a casual dinner on a Saturday night. The locals love The Porch for its easy location and the delicious food that is so effortlessly served up. It gives you the same great atmosphere, food and beer as the Elk Public House, being that it is a sister restaurant to Browne's Addition's favorite neighborhood eatery. The Porch is date ready yet family friendly. The prices are affordable and the quality of food will impress you.
We happened upon The Porch last night just at the right time. It was not too busy yet and we had our pick of seats. There is seating available at the bar, in the dining room and then a cozy porch, which is fitting based on the name. In the summer time the porch seating area offers great views of the golf course adjacent to the restaurant and the side door rolls up like a garage so you get the feeling of dining al fresco.
The menu is great offering you a considerable selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees. We noshed on chips and salsa and as a group opted to have garlic breath for the rest of the night and ordered the roasted garlic and onion bread w/ gorgonzola, while drinking our beers and waiting for the real food to show up.
We each were in the mood for something a little different. The 74th St gumbo was tasted and liked. It was a tad on the spicy side as the menu warned, but the kind of spicy that hangs back in the alley and punches you in the gut when you think you're in the clear. Thankfully it comes with slices of french bread to help cool the burn.
The Santa Fe Pork Tacos were pretty spectacular and definitely worth ordering again. They came with ranch style black beans that were delicious all on their own.
Also enjoyed were one of the night's specials, Carribean Pork Sandwich. This was ridiculously tasty and offered up complex flavors of ginger, orange and that extra something you can't quite put your finger on. Served on a fresh, toasted french roll and sprinkled with cilantro to add that bright finish. As a side dish and a staple of the Public Houses, the roasted corn pasta salad made the perfect accompaniment.
Sadly we had no room for dessert left. The Moon Unit, which is a brownie topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce would have been the pefect finish to such a great meal. If you go, go with a local, they'll show you the ropes and turn you onto the favorites that aren't on the menu. We were fortunate enough to be taken by a local and the pressure was on her to find something great to impress my friend Erica, who just moved out here from Columbus, OH. Erica loved it so much she felt compelled to take the pictures for this entry. She did a great job of course she had great material to work with as the food is just as delicious if not more as it appears in the photos.
The Porch is the kind of restaurant that makes you think a quiet life of suburbia would be quite alright as long as this was just around the corner. The food was great, the atmosphere perfect and the staff friendly and attentive. I should say we'll keep going back. Food enjoyed off the beaten path is the best kind. The Porch Public House
